Basic Flute Lessons - What Will You Learn

 Printer friendly page

When you have made the decision to learn the flute, the next step should be to determine what method to use to learn. You have the option to take private lessons or take lessons online. Both are worthy ways of learning the flute.

In a physical class, you will have a singapore flute class schedule and you will also have homework. However, when you study online you can also set up a schedule and practice time if that is the way you learn best.

Of course, by learning online you can also learn at your own pace and at whatever time you want. If you are an adult, with many responsibilities to keep you busy, then this is the best option for you. You will be able to optimize your time better by scheduling your flute lessons around your other activities.

The first thing you will learn in your basic singapore flute lessons will be the functioning of the flute. The transverse flute is closed at one end and open on the other. You blow through a hole that is near the closed end, and the way you blow will generate the tone. This hole is called the blow hole.

The way you blow will cause a vibration up the column of the flute and the frequency can be controlled by controlling the length of the column of air. You will use the finger holes to manage this frequency.

In your first few Singapore flute lessons you will learn to make a tone, which is not difficult but takes some practice in the beginning. The tone is produced by blowing across the blow hole, not into the hole itself.

You will learn to hold the flute toward your right, even if you are left handed. The edge of the blow hole should be just above your lower lip and getting the stance right may take some practice. You might want to try and use a mirror to make sure you get this right.

After you have mastered the proper way of holding the flute and blowing a tone, you will be taught to play a scale.

When you first learn to play a scale on the flute you will be asked to take all your fingers off the holes and blow across the hole, then cover the first hole with your index finger, and you will notice that the tone changes.

For a while you will just practice doing this, and then you will go on to the next hole and so on. This will teach you to play the scale backwards. The moment you become good at it, then you can play it the right way from the bottom up.

In those first flute lessons, you will learn that a flute with six holes can play fifteen different tones, and after that you will learn the half tones which are another ten tones. They can either be sharps or flats in the chromatic scale. You achieve this by covering with your fingers some holes halfway, or covering one or more holes in sequence.
